Miami Dade College Selected for The Chronicle of Higher Education's 2009 Great Colleges to Work For

Miami, Monday, July 06, 2009 - Since it opened its doors half a century ago, Miami Dade College (MDC) has been frequently recognized for its academic and cultural programs, as well as for its operations. Today, The Chronicle of Higher Education announced that MDC has been selected for its 2009 Great Colleges to Work For program. In fact, it made the publication's Honor Roll for receiving the most individual recognition in the various categories surveyed. It was also lauded for its Learning Outcomes initiative. More than 41,000 college employees and nearly 250 institutions nationwide participated in the application process.

This program is higher education's version of the popular Fortune magazine survey, with one key difference: It does not rank institutions in one big list.  Instead, the program recognizes select groups of colleges for specific best practices and policies, such as tenure clarity, collaborative governance, work/life balance and compensation and benefits. The program results, including recognized institutions, are being published in The Chronicle's Academic Supplement in July 2009.

WHERE MDC EXCELLED

MDC was recognized in numerous categories as part of the process. Again, it received so much recognition in the various categories it made The Chronicle's Honor Roll. In the Work Environment category, the college was recognized for job satisfaction, faculty-administration relations, collaborative governance, facilities and security, and supervisor-department chair relations. In the Institutional Policies category, MDC was recognized for professional/career development, work-life balance, confidence in senior leadership, internal communications, and connection to institution and pride. The college also appeared prominently in several other categories.

'I am very proud of this distinction, especially during a time of many challenges in higher education. It is a tribute to the backbone of our college - the faculty and staff – who make MDC a ‘great college to work for,' said Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, president of Miami Dade College. 'I thank everyone who participated in the application process and commend them for their hard work every single day on behalf of our students.'

The process consisted of two online surveys: the ModernThink Institution Questionnaire (IQ) completed by one or more management representatives at each institution, and the ModernThink Higher Education Insight Survey (Climate/Engagement assessment) completed by a random sample of full-time and adjunct faculty members, administrators, and professional support staff at each institution. Results from both of these surveys were used in the assessment process which included analysis of demographic data and workplace policies at each of the participating institutions.

The program is also designed to help colleges improve as workplaces through the individual reports they receive, so The Chronicle names only those institutions that have scored well enough to be recognized in any category. There was no cost to participate and the program was open to all non-profit higher education institutions.

Miami Dade College, the nation's largest institution of higher education and one of the most respected, has received numerous national awards and distinctions throughout its history including the first-ever Theodore M. Hesburgh award from the American Council on Education and TIAA-CREF for faculty development and the Savior of our Cities award from the New England Board of Higher Education where it was recognized alongside several Ivy League institutions and top universities. In addition to The Chronicle of Higher Education, it has also received major awards and recognitions from other important publications including Newsweek, Time magazine, Miami Today, Hispanic Magazine, and Computerworld. Its president, faculty and staff have also been the winners of many important national individual awards.
